Electrolytes are special minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, lithium and phosphorus) that are used at a cellular level (especially nerve, heart, muscle) to maintain voltages across cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses (nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells. They are essential for the life and function of every cell in our body.
